Abstract

This study includes the findings of a study conducted on teaching the four basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in teaching Turkish at primary and secondary school levels. The study focuses on the use of methods based on student-centered and interactive teaching approaches. Techniques such as reading aloud, listening to podcasts and listening to interactive videos are used to develop listening skills; while discussion groups, role-playing and debate activities stand out for speaking skills. While meaning analysis, reading strategies and reading acceleration techniques are used for reading skills, applications such as creative writing, text analysis and critical writing are preferred for writing skills. The study was conducted with a qualitative approach, and the variety of methods used by teachers shows that each skill is addressed from different perspectives and that teachers try to help students with various strategies. Analyses made according to the gender and experience of teachers were also included in the scope of the study. As a result, it is emphasized that in order to make the methods used in teaching language skills more effective, the use of technology-supported materials and the dissemination of interactive methods such as group work and discussion simulations should be made widespread. It is also recommended that more activities be organized to improve listening skills and that tools such as portfolio studies be used to monitor student progress.
