The formation and growth of Mu'tazilite thought lasted for nearly a century and a half, from Napoleon's invasion of Egypt to the eve of World War II. The study of this movement and intellectual development begins with Napoleon's invasion because Egypt and its thinkers, more than other Arab lands, became connected to the West and became self-aware.
